SESSION 19:IMAGE FORMATS, STORING, PUBLISHING AND SHARING

PART 1: IMAGE FORMATS
ACTIVITY:
a) Find out the most common formats for images and write a short description of the features of each of them.
A computer file extension is commonly a three character addition that follows the name of a file. A few of the more common file extensions include EXE, DOC or DOCX, XLS, TXT, PDF, and MP3.
There are dozens of different image types and image file extensions that can be used when creating and saving images on the computer. Below is a list of the most common image file extensions:
 .ai - Adobe Illustrator file
 .bmp - Bitmap image
 .gif - GIF image
 .ico - Icon file
.jpeg or .jpg - Jpeg image
.png - PNG image
.ps - PostScript file
.psd - PSD image
.svg - Scalable Vector Graphics file
.tif or .tiff - TIFF image

b) Which image format preserves the quality better when it is compressed?
JPG FORMAT is a lossy compressed file format. This makes it usefull for storing photographs at a smaller size than a BMP. JPG is a common choice for use on the Web because it is compressed. For storing line drawings, text, and iconic graphics at a smaller file size, GIF or PNG are better choices because they are lossless. JPEGs are photographs and realistic images. PNGs are for line art,text-heavy images, and images with few colors. GIFs are just fail
c) Which formats are more suitable for web design?
The formats that are more suitable for a web design are the GIF(extension is .gif) and the best use for us is for line art(such as on or two color logos), simple drawings, animations, and basically any image that has no gradients or blends. GIF is also the best format when you want to display an image with a transpaarent blackground. Another is PNG(exxtension is .png) and generally produces better-looking images with smaller file sizes than GIF for the same kinds of limited-color images. Really old browsers, such as IE3, don't support the PNG format, but most Web designers now choose this format over GIF because so few people use such old browser. Browsers as recent as IE6 don't display transparent PNG files properly, which is unfortunate because PNG files tend to handle transparency better. The last one is JPEG(extension may be .jpg or .jpeg) and is the best format for colorful, complex images (such as photographs);images containing gradients or color blends; and any other images with millions of colours.
